On Saturday, May 13, 2006, the New York Magic over-powered the South Jersey Banshees (6-0) in the first "official" match of the season.

On the campus of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, the New York Magic made the Banshees dissapear!

Magic scored the first goal of the game in the 43rd minute, when Mary McVeigh, (former WUSA midfielder with the Philadelphia Charge), took and unassisted shot from 35yards outside the penalty box that sailed over the goalkeepers head and into the net. It was McVeigh's first appearance since signing with the Magic.

The Magic was celebrating McVeighs goal when midfielder, Kimberly Boulos, won the ball outside the box and took a shot towards the goal where Tonya Hipsman was waiting to place a quick shot into the goal.

Hipsman scored a "hat-trick" scoring goals in the 85th and 87th minute. South Jersey tried to rally in the second half but the Magic shut them down when Kate Galanek scored in the 56th minute off of an assist from veteran forward Noelle Meeke. South Jersey defender Tobi Wrice was injured on a play in the penalty box when she tackled Magic's Hipsman from behind in the box. McVeigh converted the penalty play into another Magic goal.

Magic defenders, Eleri Earnshaw, Janine Cappello, Stephanie Peel and Claire DeWalt shut down any offense that the Banshees could muster.
